Former classmates share memories -
Dan Watson recalled when the two were about 13 and detassled corn one summer to earn money. Watson spent the money on computer parts, and today builds & repairs computer equipment. Swinehart used his earnings to rent a backhoe and dig a pond, and grew up to pursue the study of science. Today he is the Associate Professor of Biology at Hillsdale College in Michigan.

Got Pond?
Bristol native explains local eco-life cycles

Dr. Anthony Swinehart of Hillsdale College returned to his hometown to talk about the underwater world of Elkhart County

On Sunday afternoon at the Elkhart County Historical Museum (E.C.H.M.), Swinehart presented a program on the more unusual aquatic organisms of the eco-life in Elkhart County's lakes and ponds. On exhibit were bottled specimens like a mudpuppy. Audience member Jim Flora shared an article about a giant fish.

Swinehart's parents still live outside Bristol on the farm where as a teenager, he had a pond dug for fishing. From this small wetland, he gained his passion for studying the wildlife he found there from fish to fish-eating aquatic insects, and microscopic predatory protozoa to freshwater sponges and jellyfish. Swinehart's mother, sister and aunt attended the presentation.
