Just the Facts

2010 marks 10th Anniversary

Bristol, Indiana's first news website officially launched on January 3, 2000 with a report on new Town Council member, Dan McNeil and ended that year on Dec. 31, 2000 with a story about the record December snowfall of 42 inches.

2000 year of Change

As the first year of the 2000's, also called the "naughts," the year began with the Y2K fears, which were largely unfounded, at least in Bristol.

Other 2000 Events

The year also marked the installation of computers in Bristol Police cars; the opening of the Bristol Elementary School Media Center; the successful fight by Bristol Alumni to keep the Pirate as the school mascot; the campaign that prevented turning Bonneyville Mill Park into a major tourist attraction; The Year of the Pirate Homecoming Parade, one of the largest in years; Bristol resident Chris Chocola's first run for political office; Local Media struggled meeting the challenges of going on-line with few photos or updates; Marshall's Posse provided security for KKK Rally; the Bristol Hardware Store held final auction & closed; and snowplows ruled the roads at year's end.

2000: Bristol Post Office - End of an Era?

In December of 2000, Postmaster Sandy Edsall and her team were gearing up for the increased volume of the holiday season and the thousands of letters and packages that arrived and left the Bristol Indiana Post Office everyday.

Every Saturday and weekday morning, clerks on the 2000 team, Greg, Barb, Steve and Sonhui along with carriers Nedra, Mary, Rhonda, Dave, Denise, John and Jenny started at 6am in time to meet Victor who brought the mail truck from South Bend. Substitute carriers Carla, Sue, Jane and Linda were the backup to make sure mail got delivered each day.

By 9:30am, mail had been placed in the over 600 Post Office boxes for businesses or those living within 1/4 mile of the office, and carriers were on their way to cover the 6 routes (that increased to 7 in January of 2001).

In 2000, Edsal was hoping for a new larger facility, but ten years later in 2010, the future of the current location is in doubt, even as the carrier routes will be moving to Elkhart in mid-January 2010, and window hours and personnel at the Brisol office will be reduced as well. End of a era? Only time will tell the fate of one of the most highly recognized for customer service and profitable of local offices.
